Hanagatami (Japan Film Festival 2020)

“It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to make this film,” said Director Nobuhiko Obayashi. HANAGATAMI is the final chapter of his war film trilogy. The film is based on a novel of the same title. Although Obayashi had finished writing the first draft of the screenplay long before producing HOUSE, shooting did not start until 40 years later, the year in which he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. The story of HANAGATAMI revolves around Toshihiko, a sixteen-year-old boy who moved to Karatsu (a port city in the west of Japan) with his aunt Keiko during the time when Japan was on the eve of the Pacific War, and developed a romance with his sick cousin Mina.
